No rest for the weary Legionary!

27 04 2008

This time last week, I was busy adding extra kilometers to the 7.5 I’d already marched around Rome in full kit. According to the pedometer, we walked a marathon (26 miles) in Rome over the weekend, plus at least another 10 miles in Lorrach!

I’m now getting ready to head off on Thursday with my own Legion, the VIII Augusta, to Rockingham Castle near Corby, Northamptonshire for another historical event. I bet the weather won’t be as nice!

It makes me realise how hard the guys from Deva Victrix work – some of them were back on duty the day after we got back… Rather them than me!

As seen on SkyNews

Thank you Squamatus for telling me that we had been shown on SkyNews’s 7 day review. Despite the numbers of Roman Soldiers who took part in the Founders Day Parade, there is only one name mentioned, he travels from Deva all the way to Roma to get his name said on British national television. I am of cause talking about the one and only Maximus GITTUS!!! I don’t know how he does it!!

From The Wall Posting

27 04 2008

This was placed as a comment under Last into battle, First in the pub. By Robin Brown who joined “The Victrix” for our epic journey……

Glad you made it home okay, Mummius! I had a 22 hour day getting from Lorrach back to Wales with the main troop, and finally got back to my posting up on the Wall at 3pm on Thursday.
It was certainly worthwhile to go without all that sleep in order to return to the place where it all began…
I think we also made history in a small way by combining members of two legions, XX and VIII for the benefit of the spectacle, without getting hung up with all the “equal recognition” issues which have always blighted reenactment in general. Although we all get a buzz out of looking “cool”, I hope that everyone can keep some humility and make it possibly for us to do this again. There have been too many groups which in growing in stature have succumbed to their own egos and suffered in everyone’s eyes as a result. It’s better to honour the founders of our civilization by portraying excellence and letting the performance speak for itself. Having said that… what a performance… I’m proud to have served with you all, comilitones!
