Countess Of Chester Hospital Midnight March

23 06 2008

Last Saturday night/Sunday morning saw several of our group help the Countess’ fundraising team with the midnight march which helps raise funds in the region of £750,000 to provide overnight accommodation for relatives of patients in the Critical Care Unit at the hospital.

Braving the very, very, very Wet weather, our intrepid team of Mummius, Feronius, Longinus, Brutus, Germanicus, Ed(us?) our Cornu and Brenda(us?) lit our torches (eventually) and officially started the march at midnight, keenly followed by over 500 ladies from the staff at the hospital.

At this point Germanicus and Brenda had to leave us due to a family bereavement (the fact they came at all shows amazing bravery by them both) whilst the other 5 of us had to line a dark route of the A41 and act as marshalls which the ladies definitely appreciated due to the number of “thank you” comments we all got.

To finish the night/morning Feronius, Longinus and Brutus went back to the finishing line and handed out the medals to the girls as they came home after a gruelling 13.5 mile trek around Chester, and to top it all off we got free bacon butties and a brew before leaving the site at 5.45am.

I would like to thank the girls at the Countess Fundraising team Kathy, Kate and Pam for giving us the opportunity to do our bit - keep up the good work girls.  Also, a big hello to Bec and the team at Marcher Sound 103.4FM for keeping us going with the banter at daft o’clock and we look forward to working with you all again soon.

Aurelius Lucius Brutus.

St. Paul’s C of E Primary, Longton, Stoke on Trent

20 06 2008

Today was my best school visit this year, I received a very warm welcome from staff and pupils. I had the most enjoyable day teaching Yr4, especially one young lady, called Cloe. Cloe all morning was my own personal Nemisis, I hope you had as much fun bouncing of me as i did of you.

I will have to ask your headteacher Mrs. Hearson, to award you all with an award of her choosing, for next Friday’s assembly, for your excellent work today, your excellent questions and answers. One answer in particular, I can’t remember who gave the answer, but when asked what animal the small fur I was holding had come from, I got the answers of everything from squirrels to bear but the best by far was it came from a “CHIHUAHUA”. It was in fact a Rabbit fur. Now I think of it there was another answer that had us all in stitches, when I was holding up a Sling, and when asked what it was for, one little boy (you know who you are) in his little voice said “It’s a G String”

Once again thank you for a wonderful day, I hope to see you all again in the future.

One of the Largest Patrols

18 06 2008

Today one of the largest patrols left the museum, a group of newbies from St. Elizabeths Primary School in Liverland had 43 recruits. I will admit that I thought it would be a logistical nightmare to get them around the Patrol route, and to keep them in a tight enough group so they could all hear the information.

They ALL proved my fears to be totally unfounded, They maintianed a tightish group all the way round, and after an unsteady start, they really got into the swing of things, and were coming out with some sensible answers.

For the return, I tried to get them into groups of 3 for a quicker return to the museum, this worked very well as they got back to the museum quicker, it also made them louder for the return through Chester. Over all I was very impressed, and had to give them a 9.5 out of 10, as the only thing that let them down was leaving wallaping gaps in the lines. I look forward to seeing this school again in the future.

Aftermath

4 06 2008

Rome is far behind now and seems as if only a shadow of a memory. Except of course of those who’s support enabled it all to happen. Time now to turn our thoughts to a busy season for events and city tours. On top of this like most small businesses and organisations we are constantly fighting for recognition and improved profile, and developing the next big thing. I am very pleased to see this site now being picked up by some of our other partners in attempting to improve the visitor experience and economy of Chester and the region. Posts from others who stand the same fight against the beauocracy goes quite some way to support the fact that Chester is in dire need of significant improvements.

I have had some criticism for allowing such negative comments about the amphitheatre. I believe that if the site was better presented and managed there would be nothing to write. Tourism in this city will not survive on its “prestige shopping” and black and white buildings. Especially as the economy takes a down turn. NWDA invest a fortune in public money to promote and develop our visitor economy. A top heavy system which probably costs in administration than the amount that finally reaches the intended destination.

I speak to many people and businesses in the city and I would say that the current moral and optimism is very low. If you’re an hotelier, caterer, restaurant, stately home / country house then the system is your friend. If you’re a small attraction or tour guide then you will fall between the cracks at the moment. Don’t believe me then check out the categories currently available for awards on the CATS (Chester Awards for Tourism skills) and even the Chester and Cheshire awards. You will find no categories for our excellent city guides (blue badge, Green badge), street entertainers, visitor experiences or indeed nothing that recognises those of us who actually meet more tourists than any single hotel or restaurant. Visitors need more than a good hotel and expensive shopping. These awards also have to be applied for which requires the nominee to basically sing their own praises. Maybe I am naive but I think that the Tourism department and marketeers should have there fingers on the pulse of the region and know who is being effective. In past years those people who are paid (well) to promote our tourism etc. have them selves been winners of these awards which for me, blows all the integrity. How can those who establish and manage the awards honestly win them?

Perhaps we should look at the examples of other more effectively promoted tourist cities like York with their raft of merit based awards for guides, street entertainers, and quality visitor experiences. Along side the Hotels, restaurants, Chefs and large scale exhibits.

Surely the tourism of any city requires a fully integrated approach of all these business and experiences, each must feel valued, respected and supported. It should be result lead. Marketing positions should be result based (you’re only as good as your next sale) Clever people can write reports and the politicians can spin and sell it but reality is evident to those of us with the smallest voice. Who’s very survival is dependent on strong tourism economy.

Once More unto the Breach

4 06 2008

Chester’s best kept secret the Shrine of Minerva at Edgar’s field, was recently the focus of our attention. A good two day presentation of how the Romans may have celebrated Minerva the third most important Deity in the Roman Pantheon. My thanks go to those of our group who stood shoulder to shoulder in challenging weather condition to man the camp and hold the all night vigil on both nights. As a group I have to say I was a little disappointed in the support of the overnight requirement. We still have some way to go it seems to reach our preached Frater ships. Also thanks to those demonstrating the religion it was a huge amount of work well presented did you see the silly hat. Ya Raq’s dancers though frozen gave a brilliant display of how a woman can wiggle with practise,(got my vote). The support of the Grosvenor Museum providing Jim the fab but mad potter was great. Our thoughts to Echeniron who couldn’t make it due to his wife’s health. We missed you. The weather was so threatening that Minerva’s owl didn’t make the second day but my offering of wine for good weather won her over it seems despite BBC weather forecast.

The amphitheatre excavations have now been covered over. Returned to the original slight slopping bank. Grading has been attempted with what can only be described as a disastrous choice of material. The levelling and finishing of which was obviously done by a blind man in a latex JCB. The very popular walk way has of course been closed which is to be expected as it makes no sense what so ever and was the only way to measure the footfall for the arena.

The good points are that the local youth problem, who home themselves at the arena. Now have a new game! Throw stones at Dee house window; at least they are not getting bored with just littering and abusive language. ( If we gave them grenades they could demolish DEE House for us). How do they afford those mobile phones and drugs? Oh yes parent pocket control “here is some money sod off; be someone else’s problem.” Said the reasonably well off parent to the inconvenient adolescence offspring.

We dont have to trudge all the way around the arena to gain access. Now we need only employ our all-terrain Roman sandals to reach the inner sanctum in half the distance.

This is achieved of course via the once condemned but now miraculously self fixed wooden stairs. To think our proposition to sand cover the arena and improve its presentation and possibilities was denied. I suppose it would tarnish the lovely glitter from the million tiny shards, of glass and the landscaping of newly smashed ancient masonry.

Unfortunately for the public our planned gladiator shows will not be able to go ahead this year due to the state of the arena which will be a great disappointment. Unless of course something is done to change the current situation.

Having said all this my most sincere sympathy goes out to those in the council, whom I have had many conversations with re this and other situations. Each one is dedicated and very hard working. They need to be really as they are doing what they can with zero funding always a tricky one that. Your in the Front line receiving heavy fire, got all the weapons you need; just no bloody ammo “Medic, Medic”. In fact funding is so non existent that when we put the Minerva shrine weekend on (at our expense) we couldn’t even get the city to hire us a toilet. The local pub closest of course was as unhelpful as they possibly could be. Despite the increased trade from our event. Toilet use for performers was denied.

Thank God then to the fabulous Friends of Edgar’s field without whom we would have literally been in the ****. Though I am sure the DEE could have coped.

Watch this space as we March forward towards Archaeological weekend a free show for the public provided by the Friendliest most approachable team of archaeologists I have ever met. Lots to see lots to do. We will be out in force doing what we can with what we got even promise to smile. Once more unto the breach dear friends once more or block up the gates with the quango dead.

Hotelier claims Roman site is a ‘disgrace’

Hotelier claims Roman site is a ‘disgrace’

THE MANAGER of a city centre hotel has questioned why Chester’s amphitheatre has been filled in after complaints from guests about its condition.

Damon Yoxall, general manager of the Westminster Hotel, City Road, has stopped recommending the ancient site because of the number of complaints he has received from tourists staying at the hotel.

He said: “I would like to know what plans there are for the amphitheatre – I have had many complaints about the state of the site and would not recommend a visit for any of my guests or myself as a local.

“A quarter has been filled in and I want to know why it was not grassed over to match in with the other quarter, and what is happening with the derelict building? It remains because it is the only Georgian building in Chester but it is being left to crumble.”

As the hotel relies on tourism for its survival, Damon has also questioned the development of other areas of the city which he says have a detrimental effect on business.

“Why spend money on Chester Gateway outside the train station and not on the other end of City Road?

“The city should be attracting the same clients as Harrogate or York – after all we charge the same prices to stay here and charge the same prices for the local attractions.”

Chris Brown, chief executive of Visit Chester and Cheshire, said: “We cannot take our eye off the ball and move Chester forward. People who visit Chester are our customers and we cannot afford for them to go away having had a poor experience.”

Chester city council say the amphitheatre was backfilled with sand and limestone chips to conserve the findings whilst the long-term conservation and development of the site is considered.

Spokesman Kathryn McGiveron said: “Protecting our city’s heritage and boosting Chester’s position as an international tourist attraction are both important priorities and the council is looking forward to exploring options of how it can make the most of this internationally important site.”

Roman soldiers appeal to clean up amphitheatre (From the Chester Chronicle)

30 05 2008

CHESTER’S Roman Tours say the Amphitheatre is becoming too dangerous to take children - because it is littered with broken glass and syringes.

Lance Prince, known as Caius, one of five full-time soldiers at Chester Roman Tours says that, along with rival armoured guides Dewa Roman Experience, the centurions bring in more than 100,000 visitors to the city each year.

However the centrepiece of their tour, a visit to the city’s famous amphitheatre, may have to be struck off the trail.

Lance explained: “There’s going to come a point when we say we can’t go in there because it’s too dangerous.

“We have to do a safety check every day. We always find bricks and broken glass and we’ve got to take kids down there.”

Lance regularly informs the council when more litter is strewn across the historic site but says they often take days to clear the mess.

“Four weeks ago somebody emptied a needles box which could have been used by heroin users,” he added.

“Recently somebody broke a bottle and stuck all the shards in the grass.

“We have to say to the kids ‘stand still, don’t stamp your feet down’. We stand them in the middle in a safe zone away from all the areas I know are dangerous.

“It’s time consuming. We have to get gloves, a pick-up stick and a glass box and if I get injured, the council would say you’re not supposed to do that.”

Lance says that while more than the existing one bin would help, litter is not the only problem.

“Somebody threw stones towards us when we had kids down there last weekend,” he added.

“A couple of weeks ago I saw people dealing drugs in the Amphitheatre and smoking cannabis.

Mike McGivern, Chester City Council spokesman, insisted: “When the public reports incidents of needles, broken glass, blood, urine and dog mess our cleansing teams deal with them as priority tasks.

“People responsible for such litter are putting the public at risk and we find this selfish behaviour totally unacceptable.”

Hotel manager slams state of Roman amphitheatre

The Roman Wii Fit Challenge

20 05 2008

3 Members of the Roman Tours / Deva Victrix, are now in possesion of the fabulous Wii Fit system, and are now opening the doors to all of the schools we have and will be taking on tours, and everyone one else who we have had the pleasure of having the company of, and all other visitor’s to this blog. After using the system since it came out, we have come to the conclusion that if the Wii Fit was available in the 1st Century, the Roman Army WOULD have used this to maintain their enjoyment of fitness and fun.

it also reminds us that although he are hard, fit agressive Roman Soldiers we also need to have a sense of humour, and this is how we as Romans have found to be the best way to wind down, and also have a great laugh at the Centurio attempting to hula hoop. (pictures/video to follow), and we advise caution once the videos are up, that death may occur when watching the Centurio either Snowboarding or doing Step aerobics…

Romans at Rockingham Castle, near Corby

20 05 2008

I’ve just about unpacked everything from our Bank Holiday visit to Rockingham Castle History Fair II

It was almost as hot as it was in Rome - and there I was in my “winter woolies” as worn in Lorrach, Germany!

Luckily I managed to avoid wearing my armour for most of the time. This is just as well, since I didn’t have my friend Marcus there to pour water down my neck to keep cool!

I managed to get a couple of pairs of new boots made.

Squamatus making a pair of Roman military boots at Rockingham History Fair 2008

There were plenty of native traders there too. I bought enough woollen cloth to make lots of new cloaks for the Legion. It won’t always be this warm.

Post Rome

8 05 2008

Well, we have been back 2 weeks now, and the whole coach trip to Rome and back seems a distant memory.  But what a memory.  As much as I enjoyed Rome, I have done that a couple of times now, so Lorrach, Germany, was my highlight of the tour.  The Mayor and her office of people were lovely and put on such a reception for us.  The German people in general were very welcoming.  Going through Switzerland was also fantastic.  A big thank you to the coach company Jones’ of Macclesfield for putting up with our tight schedules and becoming a part of us, it has been great travelling with them.  I also hope that we have all managed to raise alot of money for ‘When you wish upon a star’.

I did think that I might have been able to see my husband, Paul, since we got back, no chance.  He is still organising loads of things as well as working for the company.  I have also been too busy with the company and teaching the kids.

Our next event is the Minerva Festival on 25th and 26th of May.  I am too weary to be thrilled about this, but I hope all goes well.  Let’s hope the weather holds nice for it.  I’m a bit brain dead at the moment, nothing new there, so I’ll write again when I can think straight.

Good night,

Curatia, (Charlene)

Duty in the West

8 05 2008

Salve Frater,

Directly upon our triumphant return from Rome I recieved my posting to one of our auxilliary detatchments to the west of Deva in the lands of the Decengali.

From the heat of Rome to a land of a thousand different levels of wet.

Have been given the task of upgradeing this facility, major construction. Hard work only brightened by the unusual good weather recently.

I’m due back at Deva for the celebrations for the Festival of the Goddess Minerva (my personal deity) on the 25th and 26th of this month and I’m really looking forward to it, a pleasant afternoon in the bathouse in particular. A bath, a massage, wine, women and some games of dice. That reminds me Marcus Nepos you still owe me my winnings from the game in Rome. I’ll collect  at the celebrations.

Beataius Minerva Frater,

Gaius Flavius Longinus

Triple Patrol 02-05-08

2 05 2008

On Patrol with Brookside Community School from Liverpool, they were a great bunch to take. Especially one little Numptie who I feel my not be alive any more after giving the wrong answer to a question. When the Recruits were asked, “If you have not been to school, you can’t read, write or do maths, what job are you going to do?” The correct answer should have been Join the Army, but this one Numptie as quick as a flash (and definitely not thinking) shouted out “BE A TEACHER!” He has earned himself or class 10 points for his shear bravery in giving such an answer.

Patrol with Christchurch Primary School for Stoke on Trent. They started out as a very quiet Patrol who were listening and answering their questions very well (with a bit of prompting from the teachers), but by the end of the tour showed me that for little Recruits, they had very loud voices and were the loudest of the day. Saying that, the 15 boys were drowned out by the 8 girls (Boys you let the Men of the Roman Army down today, as you should not have been beaten by the girls)

Final patrol with All Saints Catholic Primary from Sefton. this Patrol of recruits were definitely the best at answering questions with hardly any silly answers, this tour was cut short courtesy of the gods who decided to pull the plug of the great bath in the sky. The decision was made to return to the museum and I have to say, I have not had a Patrol move so quickly and in excellent formation. despite the speed we were marching back through Chester they remained in almost perfect straight lines, and in twos.

Roman Day at Altbridge School

2 05 2008

Altbridge School yet again provided a great day, Mrs Layhe had the kids dressed in Roman clothes ,

and had Roman food laid on.

I must say the school kit was great, and they had a lot of Q & A for me

Thank you for a great day.

Second day in the new Armour

30 04 2008

Day 2 of the new Armour, and I am sorry to say Mummius, but the Armour needs to be returned to the Armorer for repairs….

Firstly one of the pins has pinged of from the front, all I can think of is that it disappeared when the Scutum was taken off at some point. Plus one of the plates has come away from the leather strapping again at the front, if it wasn’t for the pins, the plate would be hanging down. I think the 2 locking keys at the back may have bend, when trying to take it off…

Centurio, should you read this, can I go back to wearing my old Segmentata please??????? Although this is a very nice piece of Lorica Segmentata, from wearing it for 3 patrols now, I doubt very much if would have been an operational piece of kit. I feel that it was a parade Armour for an Optio or above.

I had 2 very good patrols today, and both sets of recruits did everything they should have done first time(ish). Out of both patrols, Riverside Primary School were the best group of recruits, this is due to todays top recruit Shorticus Minicus who listened to every word and was the only one to remember the response to “DEVA” every time I shouted it. Shorticus Minicus has earned himself or his class 5 points from me, (if Riverside have point awards) or something similar.

First day in New Armour

29 04 2008

The New Newstead ArmourToday was the first day our new Armour has been let out of the museum cabinet, and I am the only Legionary Soldier that is able to fit into it. Unlike my other set of Lorica Segmentata, this set has to be put on in the same way as a set of Chain mail Armour. From wearing this Armour for 3 hours today I have already started to find problems with this set.

1. Getting into it is not a major problem, as long as I remember to breath in.

2. Trying to get the locking pins into their holes/sockets takes almost as long as it take to wriggle into the actual Armour.

3. The spikes/rods at the front and the back, are almost like kebab skewers(Note to self) must not get to close to passing public)

4. Whenever I bend over to any degree, I risk getting one of the pins pinging out and being lost, (so far no cure thought of)

5. The sub armalis, has sheep skin placed in the shoulders, which although very comfortable and good for weight distribution, cause my shoulders & neck to overheat.

6. And this is the biggest problem area, it took me almost 10 minutes to get out of this thing at the end of my patrol today, I did think at one point that i was going to be stuck with it only half way off my body.

I have so far come to the idea that this armour was to be put on using the buddy system, as it is so hard to take it off and on by one man alone.

That said though, this piece of Armour, is the most comfortable and the most flexible Segmentata I have worn to date since joining the legion. I shall be wearing this set of Armour for at least the next 7 patrol days, to see if just by wearing it alone, there are any improvements or problems that arise from constant day in day out wearing. So watch this space for further developments……

Back on Patrol

28 04 2008

After returning from Rome, last week. It is good to be back on patrol with the little Recruits… It was another wet day in Mamucium, when I met up with 22 little Recruits who had to be taken out on their 1 hour patrol. For my pains of taking them on patrol, I have now got to spend at least a hour cleaning my segmentata, before it develops a nice light brown sheen of RUST!!

I will be glad to be back on patrol in Deva tomorrow, back on my home terrain… and hopefully better Britannic weather.

No rest for the weary Legionary!

27 04 2008

This time last week, I was busy adding extra kilometers to the 7.5 I’d already marched around Rome in full kit. According to the pedometer, we walked a marathon (26 miles) in Rome over the weekend, plus at least another 10 miles in Lorrach!

I’m now getting ready to head off on Thursday with my own Legion, the VIII Augusta, to Rockingham Castle near Corby, Northamptonshire for another historical event. I bet the weather won’t be as nice!

It makes me realise how hard the guys from Deva Victrix work - some of them were back on duty the day after we got back… Rather them than me!

Squamatus

As seen on SkyNews (Caution Required ( due to a couple of choice words) as the Centurio didn’t know he was being filmed)

27 04 2008

Thank you Squamatus for telling me that we had been shown on SkyNews’s 7 day review. Despite the numbers of Roman Soldiers who took part in the Founders Day Parade, there is only one name mentioned, he travels from Deva all the way to Roma to get his name said on British national television. I am of cause talking about the one and only Maximus GITTUS!!! I don’t know how he does it!!

From The Wall Posting

27 04 2008

This was placed as a comment under Last into battle, First in the pub. By Robin Brown who joined “The Victrix” for our epic journey……

Glad you made it home okay, Mummius! I had a 22 hour day getting from Lorrach back to Wales with the main troop, and finally got back to my posting up on the Wall at 3pm on Thursday.
It was certainly worthwhile to go without all that sleep in order to return to the place where it all began…
I think we also made history in a small way by combining members of two legions, XX and VIII for the benefit of the spectacle, without getting hung up with all the “equal recognition” issues which have always blighted reenactment in general. Although we all get a buzz out of looking “cool”, I hope that everyone can keep some humility and make it possibly for us to do this again. There have been too many groups which in growing in stature have succumbed to their own egos and suffered in everyone’s eyes as a result. It’s better to honour the founders of our civilization by portraying excellence and letting the performance speak for itself. Having said that… what a performance… I’m proud to have served with you all, comilitones!

Those of you who remember Red Dwarf will recorganise the the term BLT and it certainly was, but sadly we are back to the reality of life and are now able to reflect on the past week and of memorable events that took place. I for one one will remember the people of  Lorrach for their hospitality, and as for Rome one word will sum it up COLOSSAL. As a new member of the group I would like to say a big thank-you to you all, and making me and my family feel welcome to the group. Our trip deserves a chapter all of it’s own in the book of life.

Now we are back we are in the process of trying to upload all of the pictures he took on our expedition to Rome, they can be found at http://www.flickr.com/photos/devavictrix/

You will see the good, the bad, the ugly and the out of focus, as we have not had time yet to sort through them as of yet. As we get the time we will sort through them and remove the out of focus pictures and the duplicated ones. As you can imagine it is rather difficult to get a picture in focus when the bus is traveling down the motorways of France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy.

Last into Battle, First in the pub

22 04 2008

I arrived back in blighty at 12:30 today. Only a day late, but a day ahead of the rest of the legion. The reason for this was a missed flight. While the rest of the legion are currently backtracking the outward journey. I had planned to fly back, ready for work, but hadn’t planned on Rome’s traffic chaos on Monday. Missing the flight did give me an extra day in Rome, but it also meant about five hours of waiting around an an unplanned bill for upwards of £120.

Anyway, looking back at the big event. What an experience! Was it enjoyable? Yes, in a kind of massochistic sense. Whilst the casual onlooker may have thought what a breeze, strolling around Rome for an hour or so, think again. The temprature must have been 25 degrees in the shade, but we weren’t in the shade. Wearing full armour you build up a lot of heat but don’t shed it because there’s a tin can on your head keeping it in like a pressure cooker. All the participants were knocking back gallons of water, but plain water means you loose salts as you sweat. This impacted on several members in the form of ‘dodgy guts’ (’nuff said?).

By the end of the march (which must have been in the order of a couple of hours or so (I don’t know for sure, because I didn’t have a watch on of course), everyone was feeling the heat and the tiredness. But with constant encouragement from the centurion, we kept a solid formation and polished appearance. Unfortunately the end point of the Circus Maximus is rather lacking in shade, so some of us overheated types struggled to enjoy the picnic lunch provided. All in all a marathon ammount of exertion.

I was greatly impressed by our upportive conscripts (Rob Greenhalgh, Sean Wood, John Thirsk and Robert) who were provided with loan equipment (which wasn’t the best fit). Despite having their feet shreded on top of the other problems, these recruits did the unit proud (tal about Deep end).

So why put ourselves through that? To be part of something that great will always stay with us. The response from the public in Rome was fantastic and was topped by a friend of ours wha was in Rome at the time, when she saw us she went wild (Thanks Anne). Finally, for those who overlook what we do or take us for granted; we were marching with THE premiere Roman groups in the world on an equal footing. I am proud to say that we have acheieved that and proud that we have given Chester a world class Legion. Nothing worth doing is ever easy.

Proud to have participated and glad to be home.

Optio Mummius

“The Victrix” Strikes Again……….

21 04 2008

Last night whilst celebrating our Triumphant return to Roma, sat enjoying a few drinks in the campsite bar, alongside another european Legion. Brutus apon entering the bar, saw his Frata to let everyone know who we are shouted “Deva” to which the Frata responded “Victrix” repeated 3 times. This provoked a reply from the other Legion, of one of their chants. We then responded with a blessing chant to the Goddess Minerva, again 3 times, they responded with a further one of their own. To which we launched into a rousing rendintion of Krass a Mat. Half way through this rendition 3 members of the other Legion were on their knees bowing down as a mark of respect to “The Victrix”. Making us the Chanting Champions of Roma 2008. That’s one more battle Honour to us.( We gave them our beer order as the Victors but it failed to arrive)

Another day in the Legion

20 04 2008

After trying to navigate around Roma’s modern transport system, we finally arrived at camp @ 20:30. Some of the lads had a good nights sleep, the rest were kept awake by the snoring from the rest, one snorer per room thanks to Mummius.Food provided by the camp was excellent, and it vanished within 30 seconds of being placed on the table.
Brutus has topped up his tan as he arrived at 12 and had to wait for us, as they wouldn’t let him on site until we all arrived.all the lads were up with the larks and managed to beat the Germans to breakfast. Only the last S left before being ready for the off.
2 members of the legion tried to embaress the Legion by breaking their chairs, due to be mildly overweight.

The Legion would like to thank all our sponsors for getting us to where we are today, we will not let you down.

Ican only imagine how the soldiers and officers must have felt returning victorius from their campaigns in Brittania From Segontium in North West Wales. Frontier Wolves

Outstationed on the northern frontier,I started at one border, then crossed another before our vexillatio set off for Rome. The legacy of Rome has brought us together for an adventure away from our historical boundaries to find out how similar we are to our new friends in Lorrach. There is the rivalry and banter between those on different sides of the borders, but it really does look like the emnity is in the past. The twinning of cities helps me realise how much we have in common. So here we are in Italy, about to meet up with even more fellow Europeans to celebrate our heritage. It’s taken us about 2000 years to move from conquest to mutual respect and friendship, but at last we can return as ambassadors of Dewa to the city which gave birth to us.We’ll make you proud!

ALL ROADS LEAD TO ROME

19 04 2008

Well it has been a grand total of 3 days now and we are in Italy and well on our way to Roma. It has been a very long journey and hard work yesterday marching arond Lorrach, but so far it has been one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life! I have never been to Germany before and to be honest I never thought I would! I was totaly wrong in my assumptions of the Germans, they are some of the most respectfull and friendly people I ever met! They really pushed the boat out for us and in one solitary day, they did more for us than we have ever received to date. Thank you lorrach.
The Alps were amazing to see and it makes you wonder how Hannibal ever had the courage to attempt to cross them! I cannot wait to arrive in Roma with the Legion! This is really a dream come true for me! This trip has made me realise that honour is not dead in the world, So. Let’s bring it back with us lads! Giaus Titinius Felix

Romeward Bound

19 04 2008

3 countries in one day. Stumbled out of bed at 5 am and on the road by 6. Travelling through Switzerland gave us some great views (between all the tunnells). Eventually the snow in the Alps has given way to right sunshine in Italy.
The first of our number, Brutus, has just arrived in Rome (he flew in this morning). You can almost smell the excitement as we draw closer to Rome (or perhaps that was the hard boiled eggs we had for breakfast).
Between cat naps, a lot of the time on the coach has been spent with last minute kit making and fine tuning. Everything is just about complete now, so it’s just s matter of eating up the miles.

As we cross the alps finnaly I have a moment to reflect. Since departing Chester for me it has been full-on. I am overwelmed by the solid professionalism of our team. From the excellant drivers to the water carrying children. All have been where they are supposed to be before time. This has helped to present a very slick appearance.
Lorrach welcomed us with open hearts. it seems that you need to travel too really undestand Hospitality. The 5 Kilometer march into town was escorted by three policemen and a town official. THis under an atmosphere of two sided pride. Us representing Chester and they presenting their town to us and us to there town.

After all the official bits we spent our 3 hours of freetime in the town centre interacting with The locals in a very german way? Then the 4 kilometer march to the next appearance. The down side was missing a call in to dee 106 due to functions. Sorry mike.

Our thanks to lorrach can not be overdone we felt as if we belonged.
My thanks to our team for high spirts and quality ambassador ship. And a lament for sore feet.

Roman’ travelling through Switzerland

19 04 2008

Well we were in Lorrach yesterday. I am totally shattered from all the marching we did. The people in Lorrach were very welcoming and it was lovely to be received by the Burgmeister (mayor). The weather was beautiful. We left at 6am this morning and have been travelling through some fantastic scenery in Switzerland. It was great to see the snow on the mountains. Though I’m getting bum ache at the moment. We have just come through passport control and are now in Italy. Everyone on the coach is in good spirits and the drivers are doing us proud.

We must send our sincerest thanks to the Glashaus Cafe-Bistro for their excellent hospitality, we arrived at Chester Square to a table of glasses of wine for the soldiers. All supplied with smiles and exellent service, and constant top ups. It is worth traveling for the hospitality in Lorrach.

Lost in the culture of Germany and finding out just how the legions must have felt all those years ago.
Out last night to discover that here in Germany you can order pizza and spaggetti and have them delivered made of icecream.

before I go can I share a poem with you, to some it may not mean much but to oldies it will. This Lady Lived and to some she still live’s …………………

DRY YOU’R TEARS

you can shed tears that she is gone or you can smile because she lived

You can close you’r eyes and pray that she’ll come back or you open you’r

eyes and see all she’s left.

You’r heart can be empty because you can’t see her or you can be full of

the love you shared.

You can turn you’r back on tomorrow and live yesterday or you can be happy

for tomorrow because of yesterday.

You can remember her and only that she’s gone or you can cherish her

memory and let it live on.

You can cry and close you’r mind,be empty and turn you’r back

or you can do what she’d want:SMILE,open you’r eyes,love and go on………

Salvete,

My real name is Gary and I carry with pride the name of my adopted ancester Gaius Flavius Longinus.

As one of the longest serving members of this unit I have watched Paul (Ocratius Maximus Gittus), our Centurio, perform some apparently unbelievable tasks.

This adventure is his greatest miracle to date

My Centurio is takeing me to Rome, something I would have thought impossible only a month ago.

He (and his equally determined other half Charlene) are deserving of our most gratefull thanks for what they have put themselves through to make this happen.

We are now rushing headlong into this unique experience. Although worth doing for itself, we do actually have a job to do. Being the best we can be.

We now have a chance to show not only the City what they are missing out on but the chance to perform on a global stage.

Stand tall, stand proud. You are about to begin a new chapter of the Deva Victrix story. Lets make it a tale of glory that we can bore people to death with for years to come.

“On my own I stand alone, but I am many for we are Legion.”

Beatitas Minervae,

Gary.

ALMOST THERE!!!!

14 04 2008

Well 2 days to go and Chester’s 20th Legion will be leaving for Rome!!!

I can’t believe we are almost there and I would like to thank everyone who has helped make this happen, especially our Centurio Paul! He has worked unbelievably hard against impossible odds and obstructions from some of the usual idiots in Chester who do not realise or respect their heritage! Thank you Paul!!!

We all know that Paul isn’t the only one who has worked his socks off for this trip, to all members of Deva Victrix and all the companies and public who have sponsored us, donated for the cause and supported us I thank you. I shall make an offering to the gods for your good health when we arrive in Rome!

There is only 2 days left and we still do not have what we need to fund this trip! To all who have not even gave us a second thought I say this, imagine what Chester would be like without her Romans. You may laugh at us as we pass you in the street or make a quip but we are honering YOUR city, YOUR ancestors, YOUR heritage! We are unique because we are YOUR romans! Please support us as we support you!!!

Well, now thats over I will carry on polishing my equipment after the rain on Sunday.

Thank you again, you know who you are.

14 04 2008

Last night myself and Connix, attended the last game of the season at the Northgate Arena, to support the team. Unfortunately the team due to injuries etc. had only 6 players for last nights game, despite this they played a very good game, leading for most of it, only to have the game snatched from them in the dieing seconds. Final score 97 - 100. We must thank all of the supporters who attended last nights game, for raising £67 to help support our March on Rome which departs at 00:001 on Thursday morning, and for raising the same amount to support Clarie House.

Head Banging

10 04 2008

Well what a couple of days!  certainly rivals the Big Max without the smiles.  We are ten days to go and still £950.00 away from covering our costs.  Though that is the least of our woe’s  its hard to comprehend that this close to departure we still have a fluctuating  passenger/attendee’s list.  Some dropping out due to the costs that we need to charge the team for taking part. Others though well informed of costs and criteria dropping bombshells at the last minute.  The manipulation by various players in the Chester PLC scene who have pushed for a place and when you move the world to do for them they pull the rug out aaAAAArrrggghhh.  I suppose though my biggest disapointment to-date is the dwaning comprehension that the regional tourism industry’s promotion machine is (at least for us} not very evident on the ground.  Perhaps my expectation were to high.  I had thought that haveing the various professional bodies behind us?  would provide great marketing and raise the profile amongst the tourism and business community and members.  Yet still I find that most when contacted for support are unaware, have not a clue what we are doing

So many people have offered ther support verbally and spoken with vigour about our cause.  Not all have however grasped, that if you dont put in you dont deserve to take out.  Those that have helped us, we are very grateful to for the vision, forsight and courage your support has shown.  You know if every person in Chester gave just 10p we would have enough funds to do this and much more.

Though you would not be aware over the last 4 weeks we have as a body of  volunteers logged more than  £5200.00 of man ours based on minimum wage organising, planning, fixing, repairing equipment, creating equipment.  Attending press calls and presentations, training etc etc all this time has been done by what I call the faithful crew the unsung heroes, they know who they are and they dont do this for reward.  But you know a little encouragement would help, a little recognition of the efforts of these people on behalf of our  beautiful city.  A very wonderful lady said to me once as I struggled to understand to evident apathy around us  “Chester is as a beautiful old lady, who feels she needs doing nothing but sit back and be admired” Jackie Leech.  And sadly she was it seems right.

What a month

9 04 2008

I’m Charlene Harston, Co Director and Secretary to Roman Tours, also known as Curatia Dionysia in Deva Victrix.  For the past month the company and Deva Victrix have been organising this march on Rome.  I vaguely  remember having a husband before this month, now there is a strange man sleeping in my bed and working in the office non stop other than when he goes to do tours or get sponsorship.  I truly hope this trip will be worth it as I’m very close to becoming a nun, not in the literal sense of course.

Though I have to say I am very impressed with everybody who has helped by organising accommodation, painting shields, Paul with his ability to work the Roman Tours business and work full on getting  sponsorships, marketing  and support from the  not very helpful  Chester,  the organising of media coverage, though the media are not forth coming, with the exceptions of The Chester Chronicle and the fabulous Dee 106  and  even  myself  for sewing loads of tunics for the  group.  I’m impressed with the people who are not coming to Rome, but have still helped us immensly.  I am grateful to my kids putting up with us being so busy.  They will love this trip, what an experience for them and us. The coach company, Jones of Macclesfield, have been fantastic in helping us with this trip, also.

Though I will be glad when this trip has ended so that I can try and get back to some sort of normality, if that is possible with Paul.

Happy Birthday Mark, sorry you had to work on it at the Best of Chester Network evening, but what a fantastic job you did for us. Thank you.

Work in Progress

7 04 2008

All bar 2 scutum’s have now got nice clean brass work. All that is left to do is repaint our Boar onto them, and they will be ready to go. I am starting to hate the smell of Brasso and Burgundy paint, from doing so many of the Scutums, but that is one of the joys of being a member of “The Victrix” team.

Talking of “The Victrix” any more members who wish to make entries onto this blog, should create a user name and email me with the details A.S.A.P. so I can add you to the authorized list… and we need as many “Victrix” members as possible to start making entries. Especially as we are going to be doing a daily update to this blog once we are on our way.

Also we need as many people as possible to know about and donate to the charity we are supporting, please tell as many people as you can about it, and let them know the web address so they can donate to when You Wish Upon a Star by going to http://www.justgiving.com/chestersromanlegion.

Granada Reports Update

3 04 2008

Just to update you all, I spoke to Paul Crone today and basically, the Granada Reports film crews are all tied up this weekend doing the Aintree racing etc. so he is passing my details on to the Producer and they will contact me soon to re-arrange.  This may be as soon as next week sometime but I’m working on it being the Sunday 13th April which is the Lord Mayor send off.

He is very keen to come down though and at the very least, get kitted up for the show.

Thats all for now.

Stifling Heat In Rome

3 04 2008

Just a quick note to say I’ve been in Rome this week and the heat is absolutely stifling.  It was in the late teen °C in early April so 3 weeks down the line I’m pretty sure it will be even hotter.  We will all need water vessels for the march as dehydration will be a BIG problem and the last thing we need is anyone collapsing on the job.

I couldn’t find the route we will be marching online anywhere so I didn’t get to try it out sorry.

Also, I’ve been in touch with Granada Reports who are doing Fridays scheduling today and will ring me to confirm this afternoon whether we are on tomorrow or at a later date, so as soon as I know whats happening, you will know through the ususal channels.

Lean in to the hill

2 04 2008

Today we were given the pleasure of pitching our funding deficit to the big business breakfast at Chester race course.  Many thanks to the ever supportive James from Auctus and Paul Daniels from the Best of Chester.

Those businesses in attendance received our request and some have already responded with donations towards our costs.  The summit of our funding hill is visible but we cant plant our flag yet.  Small streams become rivers apparently but a watched kettle never boils. The whole thing was filmed by our ever present university student film crew who are producing a blow by blow documentary on our exploits and attempts to enthuse the region to its home grown Roman’s and heritage and its need of support.
Today also saw a rather productive meeting with Gerald Tattum, Alison Kelly and David Serjuip from Chester City council tourism and marketing.  Lots of good ideas and offers of  direct contact with potential funders.  Help with the press releases and joined up thinking as we try to get momentum behind the last two weeks.  Watch this space?  no final news from Granada T.V with respect to filming our training session on the 4th April between 6pm and 7pm.  But a decision is hopefully imminent.  North west tonight may also turn up for this which will be great especially if it helps to gain that last £1150.00 of support.  Big thanks to the Chronicle for another great feature.

I would like to add here that we have recieved some great words of encouragement and support from many  businesses and especially individuals.  I am quite humbled when an individual approaches  me sticks £20.00 in my pocket with the words ” I think what your trying to do is great keep going.  Please accept this as my personal contribution and encouragement”.  So a big thank you to those people who have given, when some businesses  who would benefit from an increase in visitor numbers have declined.  It is for all those who are lining up behind us that I say we will lean into the hill, its a grind.  If we cant climb it we will wear it down.  Thanks jackie we know your with us.

Progress So Far

1 04 2008

Well we have to date recieved  fabulous support from lots of different parties in Chester’s business and tourism community.  Its two weeks to go and we still need to find £1500.00.  To think that if each business in the city centre had been willing to contribute just £10.00 then we would already have succeded.  Tomorrow we present to the big business breakfast in the hope to encourage a few more contributions to close the gap on our funding needs.  Lets hope there in a generous mood eh!  It still surprises me what a big difference even the smallest contributions add up to.

The team have all worked really hard for this trip giving up there time and hard earned cash to take part in this amazing opportunity to celebrate Chester’s unique Roman heritage.   Some people have very annoyingly suggested that this is a bit of a jolly.  so lets just outline to the reader what they are doing for this.  Lets start with many hours of work creating, improving and adding to what would normally be sufficient equipment.  Time given to present media oppertunity’s with journalist and film crews.  Hours of organisation. Days of training,  A day given to presenting before the lord Mayor and people of Chester on the 13th April at 2pm.   Then when we leave on our promotion of Chester trip at around 1am on the 17th April, its a straight drive to lorrach our twin town arriving around 6pm on the same day.  Time for bed then a 7.30am wake up before donning 65lb of armour and a 4km march into the town to present to the Mayor.  Then the march back before tea.  Next day 6am departure for Rome (12hr drive)  then to bed with a 7.30 wake up.  9.30 am muster at the circus maximus a pre parade 1.5km march past the palatine followed by the big procession (7.5km)  then back for dinner and bed.   Oh yes here’s were the holiday starts we get a day of on the 21st.  7am start on the 22nd april as we head for home via Lorrach our twin town.  23rd earley start on the way back to Chester.  I forgot to mention even if we succeed with our required amount of sponsorship those takeing part still have to pay a contribution for coach,  all their accommodation and food costs.

I thought it usefull to use this space just to educate the very small minority of critics.  Yes we are enthusiast, yes we are passionate about the promotion of the heritage of Chester.  Chester is our base its a beautiful city and we would love to see it have the success it deserves.  More visitors will come to Chester, but only when we promote our successes our uniqeness.  Chester is a heritage city and the only city I have heard of were you can see full and authentically dressed romans all year round.  We are supporting the commercial and tourism interests of Chester its a shame thats not more readily encouraged.

Possible TV coverage

25 03 2008

“Not sure yet about joining you on your tripus maximus, but wonder if you might start ringing a few of the guys to see if we can do a live in Chester into Granada Reports on Friday 4th April. Not checked it withi the boss, but I sincerely hope he’ll go for it. Am in Granada Thiursday, so will check then.

(Spelling mistakes are not my doing), we have our fingers crossed that this will come off, as it will be great promotion for our trip to Rome, and of course a big promotion for our charity fund raising for the wishlogo11.gif charity.
